What is Physiotherapy and how can it help me?

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are neuro-musculoskeletal specialists (McConnell, 2009). This means we are experts at diagnosing and treating all kinds of pain and movement dysfunction in the body which may arise from nerve tissue, the joints, muscle, or other soft tissue sources like a tendon or ligament. By focusing on diagnosing and correcting the underlying biomechanical and postural dysfunctions contributing to your pain we are effectively able to treat the cause of your pain not just the symptoms.

Treatment therefore may include simultaneously treating the cause and site of pain locally with an array of hands-on treatments including manipulation/mobilization, electro-therapy, ice, heat, acupuncture/dry needling, anti-inflammatory creams, strapping and sometimes braces/aids; basically whatever gets the job done.  In order to yield more long term healing this is also accompanied with core stability training, specific strengthening, stretching and education to facilitate a pain-free return to sport or work and life in general.

Physiotherapists have been first contact practitioners in Australia since 1974 – which means you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a Physio. We are able to diagnose effectively if your condition has a musculoskeletal/mechanical origin and refer you on if it does not. Also we have one of the fastest growing evidence based practice archives and expanding body of research literature to support every aspect of what we do. Whether you wish to address your acute or chronic pain, improve your sporting performance or accelerate your rehabilitation back to work or life, Orion Family Physiotherapy will help you achieve your goals.
